Important Laptop Accessories

Omaha Web Design

  1. External hard drive I have an external hard drive with a 160 gigabyte capacity. I actually forgot what its rpm is but I'm confident that it's one of the fastest models currently in the market. I use it mainly to back up my important files and any work that I am doing. It gives me the peace of mind that I need – should anything bad happen to my laptop, all my files are neatly stored in a separate drive. Plus, I do not like to maximize my laptop's hard disk. That's because in the long run it will cause my laptop to run slower than usual.
  2. Optical mouse My laptop's built in track pad works fine but sometimes my hand yearns for the feel of an actual mouse. This is especially handy whenever I do some graphic work and I have to open up my Photoshop program. Just try creating paths using your track pad and you'll know what I mean.
  3. Laptop bag No laptop should be without one. That is my rule and I spread that rule to my fellow laptop users. A laptop can easily get scratched when it's bumped or heaven forbid, dropped. A laptop bag will help cushion the blow as well as make it easier for you to carry around. Plus a nice bag can be a fashion statement as well.
  4. Skin I put a beautiful skin on my laptop's cover. It's a picturesque beach scape of an island somewhere in the tropics. The picture is warm, relaxing and inviting. And I've seen a lot of people (women mostly) who look at my laptop because of that skin.
  5. Portable printer I actually have a portable printer that I always put in my car just in case I need to print out something while I'm outside. And it did prove very handy a few times when I had to print some spreadsheets for clients who suddenly asked me for another hard copy.

These are just a few of my laptop accessories. There are more out there and I'm sure you can find something that will make your life a lot easier.

Top Benefits of Visual Effects Schools

Omaha Web Design

What are visual effects? According to a definition these are “Alterations to a film’s images during post-production.” The visual effects are basically a sub-category of special effects in which images are manipulated for an enhanced effect for films or video. It includes amalgamation of live action recording and CGI so as to produce an ambiance which looks real. This effect may be very dangerous or expensive or simply too difficult to capture on real time basis. The demand for enhanced effects has increased manifold, especially with the films that are made with huge budgets. Since a lot of money is at stake, film-makers are seeking professionals who are experienced in this field and can generate mind-blowing visual effects, which are uncommon yet interesting and will keep the public glued to the screen.

This theory, in turn justifies a great demand for schools which can train and offer courses to individuals. The visual effects schools offer a variety of media training programs like animation, audio recording, broadcasting, digital film and video production etc. One of the best schools across the globe, in this area is Austin Visual Effects Schools. Austin is the state capital of Texas and also the fourth largest city. It is home to some of the finest fashion design and photography schools as well as art colleges, which offer comprehensive courses with the help of modern software. The courses are more than a simple practical training with software.

Some of the photography colleges are:

o The Art Institute: It offers a program in commercial photography, digital photography, photography, photography and design and Visual Arts. It offers Bachelor’s as well as Diploma in this field.

o Westwood College: It offers a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication.

o The University of Texas at Austin: The Department of Radio and Television Film (or RTF) proffers some fantastic summer media camps for the young in 7th through 12th grades. These camps are held in the campus of the University and the campers can use the equipment provided by the RTF. The students get an opportunity to look at various aspects involved in film making. Generally a camp lasts for 5 days and the fee per session is $475.

Visual effects can be divided into 4 broad categories:

1. Models, in which miniature sets are used

2. Digital and/or traditional paintings: These are required to cater to the background elements

3. Live action: Here the main characters perform. The performances are keyed through the blue-screen or green-screen.

4. Digital animation: This involves computer graphics, texturing, animation, generating 3D characters etc.

These Schools also offer Graphic Designing courses which include studying design, animated typography, creating logos, Photoshop image manipulation and web sites etc., along with a hands-on training of the software that is used in the industry.

Once you graduate from these Schools, you can obtain employment in the entry level positions of advertising designers, computer artists, Video Editing, Motion Graphics, and Visual Effects Supervisor etc.

Get Powerful Text Effect With Photoshop

Omaha Web Design

A stylish, enhancing and powerful text can do wonders to your simple text. The text effect can change the look of an ordinary boring written text and makes it more impactful and interesting. In this Photoshop Tutorial, we will learn to create powerful text effect using brushes and layer styles.

Before going further, make sure that you have the resources like Background Gradient and Color Palette, Sparkles Brush and last but not the least Clouds.

So here we go!

First Step:

– Use the Gradient as listed above to create a Radial Gradient for the Background. Then, start creating your text using the color # fcf133. You can use the font like Aller Light, and set the size to 325px.

– After the above step, set the Foreground color to # e89819 and the Background color to # fddd03, and create a new layer on top of the text layer.

– Right click on the text layer and select Create Work Path, then click on the "Layer 1" once more to make it live.

Second Step:

Select a soft brush, then open the Brush panel (Window> Brush) to modify the following settings:

– Change the Size to 30px, and the Spacing to 25% in Brush Tip Shape.

– Within Shape Dynamics, change the Size Jitter to 100%.

– In Color Dynamics, fix the Foreground / Background Jitter to 100%.

Lastly, check the Wet Edges box as this will give the brush a more liquid effect.

– After your brush is ready, pick the Direct Selection Tool and right click on the work path to choose Stroke Path.

Select Brush from the Tool drop-down menu, and make sure the Simulate Pressure box is un-checked.

Third Step:

Double click on "Layer 1" in order to apply the following styles:

– For Outer Glow: Set the Blend Mode to Overlay, the color to # e1e1e0, and the Range to 100%.

– For Inner Glow: Set the Blend Mode to Overlay and the color to # d1a6b4.

– For Bevel and Emboss: Fix the Size to 16, the Gloss Contour to Ring – Double, the Highlight Mode to Vivid Light and the color to # ffbd49, and the Shadow Mode color to # e4cc2d.

– For Contour: Just Select Gaussian – Invert.

Now your text will have a nice glow.

Fourth Step:

Duplicate "Layer 1", and simultaneously change the copy's Blend Mode to Color.

– By Right clicking on the text layer, choose Rasterize Type.

– Select Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur, and fix the Radius value to 2.5 in order to soften the text's harsh edges and make it blend with the brush stroke.

Fifth Step:

– Make a new layer on top of the Background layer and call it "sparkles". Fix the Foreground color to # fddd03, and use the Sparkles Brushto draw some sparkles around the text, but do not overdo it.

– Select Filter> Blur> Gaussian Blur, and fix the Radius to 0.5 to soften the sparkles.

– Lastly, choose the image of Clouds, and place it on top of the Background layer and under the "sparkles" layer. Resize it to fit the document if you want, then change its Blend Mode to Soft Light, and its Fill value to 75%.

Now the blue colors will blend nicely with the red ones, creating a nice Background for the final effect.

Wow, your text is creating a powerful Impact!

How to Build a Base Template File With Guidelines for a Future Club Flyer Printing Design Project

Omaha Web Design

The problem

Have you, as a consumer, ever wondered … why does my design get restored every time I place an order? This is very common question, and it's most often because software and applications like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Paint, and more, are allowing consumers to build simple designs as a means to an end to create a business card, poster or other printing project. However, these programs are very simple tools that allow you to create nothing more than a sketch for your design. Photoshop, Illustrator, and other professional design software allow for a more complete and refined result.

Remember that getting a file rejected by the printer will result in a longer turnaround time for your order to get printed. In addition, printers may even charge additional fees to get your file into ready-to-print conditions.

Avoiding Printing Issues

There are many ways to avoid getting your files rejected by the printer. The first is to hire a designer- a professional who has experience designing for printers. Generally party flyer designers have the most competitive prices, as they manage hundreds of club flyer designs per week.

Another choice would be getting a pre-designed template with the guidelines included from the printer, and laying out your design on top of the template file.

Last but not least, many printers are now acquiring an online design studio tool that will allow you to seamlessly design your business card, flyer or brochure during the checkout process with quality results. These online studios are often very easy to use and as user-friendly as programs such as Word, PowerPoint, or other software you may have used in the past.

What is a template?

A template is considered a pre-designed file which contains a preset format, and which works as a base for a future design. These template files are typically provided by the actual printer, and it should include the printer's exact settings and requirements. Still, there are very basic rules that will be compatible with any printer in the market, and that is what I will show you how to build from scratch.

Building a template for yourself

One of the most challenging elements of the process of getting a printed product to your door is how to get started. Here, I will teach you how to create a basic 4 "x6" (generic postcard flyer size) template from scratch. A flyer is much simpler than a brochure because it does not fold, and with a flyer you only have to design the front and back, whereas with a brochure with folds, there are four or more faces to create.

1 st step, creating a new image (with bleed)

Open Photoshop, click "File" (on the top left corner), and then click "New". A settings window will open and you will introduce the values ??and settings for the new file. This is essentially the most important part of the whole process.

Type a custom "name" for your new image. Then, under "preset" select "custom". For the "width" option, select "inches" first, then enter the width of the flyer. In this example, it will be 4 "tall 6" width flyer, but you want to type in 6.25 "for width and 4.25" height, for boring purposes (the space left for when the flyer is trimmed). for resolution, you should aim for larger and better quality-building your design over 300 DPI in pixels is recommended. 350 DPI is ideal. For the "Color Mode", select CMYK, and click OK.

The bleed : An extra margin specifically designed for the space left after the cutting edge. It gives your design a much better finish and it allows the printer to play a bit with the precision of the cut, without harming the look of the printed unit. If a white border is left for a business card, and the cutter or paper moves even slightly, it becomes very noticeable. With a full bleed business card, you extend your graphics and background beyond the cutting line. This gives a safer margin and a better look for your flyer.

CMYK: An acronym for C yan, M agenta, Y ellow and Blac k . This is the process used to separate an image into 4 different colors for the printing plates used by an offset printing machine. For your screen display it's always best to choose RGB, but if you want to have something that looks closer to the realized design, use CMYK. That will help you figure out how colors will look on the finished piece.

2 nd step, marking cutting edges

Create a 4 "x6" box that will act as our measurement margin guide, and center it in the middle of the design with the alignment tool. After you've created the box with the exact measurements, center it by selecting the box first, then clicking the "Selection" tool and selecting the whole working area of ??the image. Next, go to "Layer", "Align Layers to Selection", and then "Horizontal Centers" and "Vertical Centers". Your box should now be in the center of the image leaving a border of your background color around the box.

Make sure you have the ruler active so that you can drag lines into your working area. Drag lines from the top ruler to the top and bottom borders of the box we created earlier. Drag two lines from the left ruler for the left and right borders of the box as well.

3 rd step, safe area

Now you've gotten to the step where you need to create borders that will allow space for the printer to trim the edges of your poster. Remember to always allow extra space on the edges so that your text and content does not get trimmed. For this step, select the box one more time, decrease the box size to 3.75 "x5.75", and center it again. Then re-do the ruler line for each side of the box.

Remember that all text should be inside of the content area, and maintain an additional margin from the marked ruler lines.

Best Colors For Web Designing

Omaha Web Design

There are many web design tutorials that cover Web color in detailed scientific terms. However, for our objectives, let's briefly discuss Web color and how it will be used in the Web portfolio. You will need to develop a color scheme for your Web portfolio pages. This means that you will design colors for your page background, the type used on the page and any other static elements that exclude in the page. There are two types of color that can be used in Web graphics. The colors can be associated with the Web graphic file formats we just mentioned: GIF and JPG. GIF

GIF files use index color. Index color consists of 216 common colors found on all computer monitors and within all Web browsers. These common colors reside in a Web palette. The Web palette of colors is available in Macromedia Fireworks and Adobe Photoshop so they can be used in design of Web screens without variance of color when the pages are on the Internet. Also, the Web palette is the standard color palette in Macromedia Dreamweaver and Macromedia Flash. This allows us to achieve consistent color across web applications and Web browsers.

We use Web colors for:

o Web text / HTML text

o Web page backgrounds

o Web page colors used for table or layer backgrounds

o Web links

o GIF files JPG

JPG files use red, green, and blue (RGB) for graphical color. RGB color is also known as full color. Full color items include bitmap graphics or photographs. We want to utilize photographs as much as we can within a Web portfolio to add to the visual rhetoric and the narrative that we are trying to present. Extensive use of photographs, especially their manipulation in programs such as Adobe Photoshop, require a brief description of the RGB color model. RGB color is known as additive color because of all colors, red green, and blue were added together at their full intensity that would create pure white. The mixtures of the relative strengths of these colors, "create the millions of colors computer monitors can show" (Kimball, 2003, p. 95). The strength of these colors is set in from zero to 255 with zero being the least intensity and 255 being the highest intensity. When red, green and blue are combined at zero intensity the result is black. At full strength, high intensity, where the values ??are set at 255, 255, 255, the result is pure white. To remember this, here is a simple metaphor. Think of the red, green, and blue as light switches. Each light switch using a slider has a range of zero to 255. When all the white switches are set at zero the room is dark. What all the light switches are set to 255, the room is lit at full intensity. Once you begin to use image-editing applications such as Adobe Photoshop and Macromedia fireworks, you begin to explore computer color within your graphics and photographs. When discussing color usage, full color or RGB color is present in photographic JPG files and other created artwork. Full color images should not be saved as GIF files because of the limited number of colors. By having limited colors, the full color image will represent the true colors using the existing Web palette of 216 colors.

This creates a poor, dithered, and ugly image. That is why it is very important to use the right file format for each specific graphic. When converting print images to the Web, it's important that you do not use the CMYK color model for anything including graphics. The CMYK model is not a monitor friendly color space. The CMYK graphics can not be seen in CMYK on the Internet. They can only be represented by the RGB color model or the Web safe (indexed) color model. Here are the rules for Web color:

o Full color images (RGB palette) and photos are saved as JPG.

o Flat graphics (Web 216 palette) with limited color are saved as GIF files.

o For Page backgrounds use the Web safe palette (Web 216 palette) in all computer graphics, multimedia, and Web development applications. Now, let's discuss Web page and graphic size. Size

Web pages are measured in pixels. Pixels are the unit of measurement for the screen. A Web page can be any size. Standard Web pages typically fit into a few sizes:

oW × H

o 600 x 800

o 640 x 480 (Dreamweaver default)

o 1024 x 768

o 550 x 400 (Flash default)

The default Web page sizes provided in Web friendly applications and listed earlier are a great place to start. You will probably use a smaller, custom size for pop-up windows. The Web page size you choose is up to you. Remember to use actual space for the Web page effectively so that the content is in the proper portfolio to the user's navigation patterns. Web page size affects the way users move around the Web pages and the Web portfolio site. One rule: Pick a size for all main screens and stick to it.

Consistency in page size r should be used on each level of the web portfolio design flowchart. You will need to understand size in the image editing application when you develop screens and Web graphics. We must keep our graphics within the page size guidelines otherwise that they will over extend the web browser and the user will need to scroll to see them. That is not a good thing and will definitely turn off the user. When you are looking at Web screens and graphics in an image editing application such as Macromedia Fireworks or Adobe Photoshop, you can see the exact size the image will occupy on a monitor when the view is set to 100 percent.

This means that you can get an accurate indication of how a page will look before going through the process of making it an HTML Web page. This helps with design and production. It helps eliminate guess work when develop- ing pages. Size also depends on resolution. Let's discuss resolution next.

Getting Started With Ubuntu – How To Connect To The Internet And Do Common Window Tasks

Omaha Web Design

Download the latest version of Ubuntu from their official site and burn the downloaded ISO file to a blank CD. Any good CD burning software should be able to handle writing ISO files to a disc.

When the CD finishes remove it and put it back into the drive so it auto plays and followed the instructions to boot into the Live CD. Live CD allows you to temporarily run Ubuntu and most of its features without doing anything to your installation of Windows. This is a good chance to see if you really like what Ubuntu has to offer before really committing.

After playing around in Ubuntu's environment for a bit you'll notice an examples folder on the desktop that has various types of files that can be opened using Ubuntu's default programs installed. For example, Ubuntu will use Open Office (a free alternative to Microsoft Office) to open DOC files.

Connecting to the Internet in Ubuntu

There was no obvious signs of how to connect to the Internet. After looking around the help pages built into the operating system you'll notice that connecting to the Internet is pretty simple, unless you have a USB ADSL modem. Being on an Orange broadband basic package means a USB ADSL modem has to be used without you own a router separately.

Being on the basic package means connecting to the Internet using a USB modem, not an Ethernet Live box that Orange provides on the upgraded package. So rebooting the computer and finding a web page came up with the instructions to extract some firmware, write a boot script etc. just to get the modem to connect.

After completing the modem installation in the Ubuntu's Live CD environment you'll be prompted to restart Ubuntu to get started. Restarting Ubuntu whilst using Live CD will just restart into Windows, so that's no good!

There had to be another answer. At this point I got fed up and went back to Windows. A few months later I plucked up the courage to try Ubuntu again but the Internet connection issue was still stick in my mind. So I searched around on Google more and searched the Ubuntu Forums. This is when I came across some luck. I found a thread in a forum thread where a guy made a USB ADSL modem manager program!

Was this going to end the problem? I thought. So after checking out the USB Modem Manager site and then following the link to the latest version, I downloaded the Debian file for it, .DEB. First thought was, being used to Windows, what the hell do I do with a Debian file? Is it a Ubuntu version of a Windows zip file or what?

I double clicked the Debian file downloaded to my desktop and voilà, it started to install the modem manager, great, must be just Ubuntu's version of a windows .EXE file. The program prompted me to unplug and plug my modem back in and it still did not work. So after a couple of times of re-extracting the firmware, disconnecting and reconnecting using the options in the manager, the progress bar for the Internet connection located in the top right went fully green, it must've worked.

I opened Firefox, typed in a URL and hey presto, the Internet worked. Fortunately, this USB modem manager does not require a restart so it's possible to run and test the Internet while using the Live CD, which I highly recommend doing.

Taking the Plunge with Ubuntu

With this caveat fixed, I took the plunge, backed up all my files onto an external hard drive and fully installed Ubuntu over Windows.

After trying it for just over 24 hours I became convinced that this was an operating system that I would have been using for the long term. I can copy large amounts of files from one hard drive to the other without my PC noticeably slowing or making music stutter, file transfers are seamless while doing other tasks.

I tried opening a video file and Ubuntu complained that it could not play that type of file, but it soon came up with a message telling me I could download the required files to get it to work, so a click of the OK button and it was fixed. I tried playing an MP3 and the same happened, just a click of a message and Ubuntu located and installed the required files to play my music. These files need to be downloaded separately due to proprietary issues.

A few things take a while to get used to, such as the folder views it has and the prompts that come up occasionally requesting your password to be entered. This may seem odd to have to enter a password just to change the date / time. With Windows latest operating system, Vista, prompting for requests on more admin type tasks, the odd one or two from Ubuntu are manageable.

Playing Video Games and other Windows Software in Ubuntu

I do not play games much and have not attempted to do so yet, but I'll try WINE sometime and see if that works. WINE is a program to let you play Windows only software in Ubuntu. Could come in handy for Photoshop since the equivalent, GIMP, just does not cut it for some things I want to do, such as batch image processing.

Ubuntu is a flavor of Linux that is becoming a popular, free alternative to Windows. To get started, go to the Ubuntu site.

Conclusion

Hopefully this guide will help the average computer user out there decide whether they really want to take the plunge with a different, but free operating system. In summary, if you're prepared to spend a few hours to get used to it and to get it working the way you want, go for it!
